What can City of London dentists do about discoloured teeth?

January 31st, 2012

Discoloured teeth are a common problem and more and more people are having treatment to make their teeth look whiter and brighter.

Why do the teeth become discoloured?

There are various reasons why teeth become discoloured. Some people have naturally yellowy teeth and as the teeth age they tend to lose their natural whiteness. Drinking strongly-coloured drinks, such as red wine and coffee, on a regular basis can cause staining and smoking will almost certainly darken the colour of the teeth.

Treatments available to lighten teeth

In cases of mild discolouration, formulated whitening toothpaste may be effective. However, if you want more noticeable results, tooth whitening treatments are the way to go. You can choose from professional in-chair whitening treatments and home treatment kits, though many dentists recommend a combination of both to achieve optimum results.

In recent years, professional whitening has become very popular. Professional treatments use bleaching agents to remove surface stains and lighten the colour of teeth by several shades. In some cases, the gel is activated using a laser beam. The procedure is safe, simple and quick and the results are amazing. The most popular whitening treatments include Zoom! Whitening and Enlighten.

If you don’t want professional in-chair treatment a home whitening kit may be an ideal solution. A home whitening kit involves wearing a custom-made tray, which contains whitening agent, to gradually lighten the teeth. Most people wear the tray overnight for a set period of time. Enlighten whitening involves wearing the trays for 2 weeks and then having a one-hour session at the surgery to give your teeth an extra special glow.

Cleaning treatments

If you just want your teeth to look a little healthier and glossier, you should visit a hygienist for a deep cleaning and polishing treatment. The treatment will remove stains from the surface of the teeth and give them a glowing, shiny finish. Cleaning treatments also help to keep oral health diseases at bay and will leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh.

City of London dentists welcome the arrival of the First Day of Winter

December 1st, 2011

With the arrival of winter, the number of clothes we now have to wear overshadows all our hard work at the gym. The only visible part of our body is our face and if we then wear a woolly hat to keep out the chill, the main focus is moved to our teeth. Teeth with stains and discolouration become a cause of worry for those who want to impress others, but this problem can be easily treated with laser tooth whitening.

Laser tooth whitening uses a light activated bleaching gel to whiten your teeth and takes only one hour to whiten your teeth by up to 7 shades. People with highly stained or discoloured teeth could find a dramatic change with just one session of laser teeth whitening.

Effectiveness of Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening is a highly effective teeth whitening technique and can provide better and longer lasting results than at home whitening products. The effect of laser teeth whitening can be seen for nearly five years, while the effects of teeth whitening kits only last for six months.

Quick Results

Dramatic whitening can be achieved within just one sitting. However, depending upon the requirement a candidate may need to visit the practice more than once. Laser whitening treatment is still faster and more effective in comparison to the over-the-counter teeth whitening products, which require daily appliance for three to four weeks.

Pain during the procedure

You may experience minor levels of sensitivity, during or after the initial whitening procedure, but this should disappear after 48 hours. Your dentist can also give you a special gel to soothe any tooth sensitivity. Within the first 48 hours foods and drinks that are too hot or too cold should be avoided to reduce any discomfort.

Cost of Laser Teeth whitening

The cost involved with this procedure depends on the clinic you choose, the expertise of the dentist and, in some cases, the location of the practice.

The first day of winter is soon to arrive. Will your teeth look as white as the snow?

November 16th, 2011

As we head towards winter at an ever-increasing pace we are unified by a hope that it is going to be a white winter. Unfortunately, nowadays a white Christmas is not a guarantee and we count ourselves lucky if there is 2cm of snow on the ground. The good news is that you can take heed of the dilemma and guarantee a white Christmas with a visit to the dentist.

You can make your teeth as white as freshly laid snow this year by receiving a professional teeth-whitening treatment. Today there are amazing techniques that are virtually painless with great results and for the most impressive results people often opt for laser teeth whitening. The procedure is painless and can dramatically improve the shades of your teeth. Most procedures can be completed in just one hour. The procedure requires no bleach and the results can last for up to a year. By using a combination of high oxygen whiting solutions and laser technology your teeth can be 8 shades lighter in just one session.

There are also a multitude of teeth beaching kits that are available in shops and salons and the technology in this area has also improved dramatically over recent years. These kits are much cheaper than the laser option; however, they don’t provide the same intensely white results or last as long.

So treat your smile to a white Christmas this year. You may still see the results the same time next year and at least you know something will be white during the festive season.

New dental ruling brings hope to smiles in London

November 8th, 2011

A new dental ruling has been introduced, which now makes the whitening of teeth illegal, unless conducted by a professional.

The teeth whitening industry makes millions of pounds each year and has been growing at a substantial rate over the recent years, with the treatment being offered by beauty salons and hairdressers.

Dental professionals have endlessly argued over the recent years that if treatment is not carried out by a qualified dental professional it can be dangerous for the patient, as unregulated products can be used. Unqualified practitioners will also not be able to identify any underlying dental problems the person receiving the treatment may have.

The new ruling, made last week by the Council of the European Union, will now ensure unqualified persons can no longer carry out any whitening treatments. This will now give dentists the ability to control the bleaching process needed when whitening teeth and ultimately ensure that the patient is in complete safety while undergoing the teeth whitening process.

Teeth whitening kits can be applied as mouthguards, strips or paint on gels and millions have been sold across the world. The main whitening ingredient is hydrogen peroxide and the European Court has deemed that any tooth whitening products that have more that 0.1 per cent of hydrogen peroxide can only be provided by a qualified dentist.

The new ruling, will also give the Office of Trading Standards the power to take those still illegally using teeth whitening products to court.

Your City of London dentist takes a look at some concerns over teeth whitening

November 2nd, 2011

We all want to have teeth white enough to show off proudly but recent research has shone a light on the lengths some people will go to achieve a bright shine.

London cosmetic dentists attend dental school for years, studying to perfect their area of expertise before gaining a full dental licence. However, it is now possible for hairdressers and beauty consultants to attend a one day course to gain a licence qualifying them to legally whiten teeth.

Cases of botched teeth whitening procedures are on the rise and dentists and doctors both agree that it can be linked to this unsafe qualification.

Dentists are now urging patients to avoid going to beauty salons and clinics to receive this popular but potentially dangerous procedure and to only use fully qualified professionals.

When done correctly teeth whitening is perfectly safe and dentists train for years to gain ability, confidence and experience before performing the treatment. Burns to gums and other oral tissue can be severe if whitening is not carried out correctly and it is often the same dentists who are warning against the use of beauty clinics that have to examine and treat these burns.

While doctors and dentists are calling for a ban on day long courses that can give beauty therapists and others the legal ability to whiten teeth, Devonshire Square Dental Studio would like to ensure patients that staff at our prestigious dental studio are fully trained in this area of expertise and are chosen for their remarkable skills and abilities, both at their specific job and when it comes to interacting with patients; treating patients to the level of kindness and professional demeanour that you deserve.

Your London dentist asks, is your smile ready for dating?

September 19th, 2011

Most people will freely admit that they spend hours getting ready for a date; choosing an outfit, doing your hair, thinking about what you’re going to say when you first meet your date all takes time but have you ever stopped to think about preparing your smile for a date? According to well-known dating website, E-Harmony, an attractive smile is the feature people most commonly look for when they are browsing through other people’s profiles.

In recent years, people have spent more money on their smile than ever before. The range of oral hygiene products has increased enormously and cosmetic dental treatments have become incredibly popular. The Hollywood smile was quickly established as a fashion trend once the A-listers started to parade perfect sets of pearly whites and dentists saw an influx of people having treatments such as veneers, invisible braces and whitening treatments.

Smile your way to success

How many people have looked at photos and criticised their smile, saying their teeth are too big, too small, not white enough, not even enough? If you thought you looked too pale, you would consider fake tanning. If you thought your nails looked a bit tired, you’d have a manicure and more and more people are highlighting the imperfections in their smile and visiting their dentist to do something about it.

It may seem simplistic to suggest that a great looking smile could help you to find the one or be more successful on the dating scene but figures suggest that most people value their smile as their most important feature and investing in your smile could actually make a huge difference to your confidence, as well as your overall appearance. If you are filled with confidence, as well as having a beautiful smile, the chances are that you will be very appealing to potential partners and you will feel more comfortable and confident when it comes to getting ready for dates.

As studies and polls have shown, most people regard their smile as a very important physical feature; as a result of this, you could spend all the time in the world in front of the mirror and you could have the most beautiful outfit and you may still be unhappy with your appearance because you have crooked, stained or crowded teeth.

Getting the smile of your dreams

Dental treatment is now more advanced and available than ever before; there is a treatment to fix almost any problem and enhance the aesthetic of your smile, such as dental veneers. It may seem like a drastic way to prepare for a date but think how much money you will save in the long-run when you don’t have to buy endless amounts of dresses and pairs of shoes that you will probably not even wear to compensate for your slightly imperfect smile; plus, you may just find the one and the dating search will be over.

Who is tooth whitening for?

August 31st, 2011

With their images adorning the glamour magazines and billboards detailing their upcoming films, the A-Listers of Hollywood always sport a pearly white smile. Their wonderful lives look fantastic and seem like a different world to anyone else who looks at these images. Although many aspects of their lives are ones which we could not lead, there is one way in which this can be done – teeth whitening.

What is teeth whitening?

Just like its title says, having teeth whitening carried out on yourself will better the colour of your teeth substantially. Whether or not the years of drinking cups of coffee or smoking tobacco products is the reason behind the natural colour of your teeth going more yellow than white, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Teeth whitening treatment is carried out via a number of ways. Essentially, teeth whitening involves the teeth to be bleached using oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide and/or carbamide peroxide so that this then lightens the shade of the tooth. Doing this will enable the layers of non-white colouring to be broken down. Once the teeth have been whitened, the effects of this can be seen for several months but the overall impact can be cut if you start to drink caffeine products or smoke tobacco. This teeth whitening treatment can be carried out at the Devonshire Square Dental Studio but there is one other form of teeth whitening procedure which can be done in the comfort of your own home.

Sounds interesting…

Known as “at-home whitening”, this treatment means that custom-made trays are created which holds a low concentration of the oxidizing agent which can then be placed next to the teeth for up to six hours over a number of days. This is ideal for those who do not want instant results but over the course of a longer period of time.

What treatments can you choose from in a smile makeover?

August 29th, 2011

Dental health for any person should always be seen as just as important as other aspects of our health. Caring for our heart, lowering blood pressure and having inoculations when the time comes is vital in order for our lives to remain as adisease-free as possible. Many people rightfully view their dental health as being just as important, while some even choose to undertake a smile makeover to spruce up their smile. These forms of treatment can come in several ways.

Tell me more…

Teeth whitening treatment is fast becoming a very popular type of oral health treatment, contributing towards a fantastic smile makeover. There are a number of types of teeth whitening treatments available, ranging from the quick fix to other forms which take just that bit longer for the full effects to become apparent. But they are certainly worth this extra time and effort.

Anything else?

Veneers, like teeth whitening, have proven that they too are becoming very popular amongst those who want to have a smile makeover and there are many reasons behind this.

Made out of porcelain, veneers are individually made so that they are created to each person’s specifications. This way, one person from the next won’t have the same veneers as they will be different from each other.

Veneers are made from moulds taken of the tooth, which enables technicians to create an impression of the tooth. Once the moulds have been made, this ultra-thin creation can then be used for a number of reasons, such as being put in front of a tooth which has become discoloured or placed in front of a tooth that is chipped or cracked due to intense pressure or force. There are many benefits to having veneers such as regaining that youthful smile which you thought was long gone and, generally, improving a person’s confidence as they will no longer be self-conscious of their oral health.

Is the bad weather bringing your smile down?

July 6th, 2011

With the British summer bringing its usual heavy dose of disappointment and rain, some of us may be looking for ways to brighten up our day. With cosmetic dentistry constantly on the rise, why not treat yourself to a brand new shining smile?

While all forms of cosmetic dentistry are becoming more and more popular, and quick and easy, it is one of the best means to make an instant impression on those you meet in your day to day life. Whether it’s teeth whitening or a full smile makeover with dental veneers, a change to your smile can not only bring a ray of sunshine to your world, but to those around you too!

Teeth Whitening

One of the most common dental cosmetic treatments at the moment, because it is both quick and easy, teeth whitening comes in two common groups: in-surgery whitening and home whitening. In-surgery will give you quicker results, with a noticeable change to your smile almost as soon as you leave the dentist. But it won’t last quite as long as home whitening, making it perfect for an impending wedding or other special event.

Home whitening is (as the name suggests!) done at home with a whitening kit. This choice takes a lot longer to take effect, usually needing a number of treatments over a few hours per day for any noticeable difference to be seen. However, this may be the better option if you don’t want the results to happen overnight so it is obvious you have had whitening done.

Dental Veneers

Often known as ‘the ultimate smile makeover’, dental veneers perfect for those who want to make significant changes to their smile and have the cash to do it. The drastic change is done by attaching wafer thin layers over your current teeth, hiding your original teeth underneath new shiny white, artificial teeth. This procedure has led to many cosmetic dentists comparing dental veneers to fake nails, but for your teeth! Veneers are commonly used to cover stained, broken and damaged teeth, but can be on the pricey side.

Zoom teeth whitening from London dentists produces incredibly white teeth

Losing that youthful white sheen on your teeth is frustrating but inevitable for most of us.  Drinking tea, coffee and cola and smoking will eventually stain your teeth even with the most rigorous of brushing regimes and just getting older causes teeth to become dull.  Having stained or dull teeth is not something you just have to accept.  Zoom teeth whitening can restore the whiteness of your teeth in one quick procedure.

Home whitening kits have long been available for the extra convenience of being able to administer them yourself at home, but Zoom teeth whitening gives you the extra peace of mind knowing that the treatment is carried out by the trained professionals at your dental surgery.

Over a period of forty five minutes, your dentist will apply proprietary whitening gel to your teeth before exposing them to a special curing light.  The gel and the light work together to break down the toughest of stains and restore a natural looking whiteness to your smile.  The speed with which Zoom teeth whitening can be carried out is a huge bonus for anyone who has a busy personal or work life.
