At Home Whitening For Patients In The City Of London

May 4th, 2013

All of us at some stage in our lifespan experience teeth stains or discolouration. Some of us may be more prone to dental discolouration due to our genetics or smoking habits that yellow the teeth. Our diets can affect the colour of our teeth. Those that love to drink red wine, tea or coffee regularly may find that their teeth yellow too or become dull, losing that fresh white toothy lustre.

The impression our teeth make

When we smile, the first thing we reveal are our teeth and gums. The state of our teeth can impact the way in which we are perceived by others. To help you look and feel your best we provide a convenient solution at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in central London to safely whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

Safe and convenient home teeth-whitening

Our dentist assesses your teeth whitening needs and makes appropriate recommendations for treatment. We can power whiten your teeth in our studio for immediate teeth whitening results and provide you with maintenance home teeth whitening treatments or we can give you a full home teeth-whitening solution.

Our teeth whitening dentist custom-prepares whitening trays for you that contain a low intensity oxidising agent to gently whiten your teeth shade. The tray fits over the teeth similar to a mouth shield and should be used approximately six hours a day for best results.

Home teeth whitening effects does vary from person-to-person. All our whitening products are compliant with EU regulations. Home and power teeth whitening may not be suitable for all, such as those with genetic tooth discolouration or those with overly sensitive teeth. Dental veneers may then be the ideal alternative to mask dental discolouration for healthy white-looking teeth and a beautiful smile.

Get A Gleaming, White Smile With Our Range Of Whitening Treatments For Patients In London

April 2nd, 2013

Tooth whitening has been around for centuries and a beautiful white smile continues to be associated with wealth and success. At Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the heart of London we offer a range of whitening treatments that can give you a natural, sparkling smile.

At-home whitening treatment

At-home treatment is great for people who lead busy, hectic lifestyles. The treatment produces brilliant results and the process is simple. We design a custom-made whitening tray for you to wear and then advise you on when to do so; the majority of people wear their tray at night to make sure it does not interfere with their daily routine. The treatment will usually take between 6 to 15 days and the different treatments have varying degrees of success. But we firmly believe that our at-home treatments are highly effective and they can also be topped-up to prolong results.

Are there any risks?

This is generally considered a safe treatment when administered by a trained dentist. Bleaching carries risks and there is likely to be some sensitivity, which is why we examine our patients before giving the green light for treatment. If you have any oral health problems it is better to treat these as a priority before beginning whitening treatment.

Does it work?

The treatment cannot change the colour of the teeth, but it can lighten the shade of the teeth and the results are often impressive. Tooth whitening is a great treatment for those who want to give their smile some extra sparkle, without undergoing extensive or invasive treatment. The process is painless and you will not need to worry about injections, needles or spending hours on end in the dental chair.

Why Do Clients In London Want Whiter Teeth?

December 18th, 2012

Teeth whitening may seem like a fairly modern phenomenon, but it does in fact date all the way back to both ancient Egypt and Rome. The Romans, for instance, used urine as a whitening agent. The techniques may have (thankfully) evolved, but people are just as concerned with white teeth today as they were ancient civilisations. The question is, why? To use one’s teeth is to stain them, but the extent of the staining can be seen as reflecting one’s attitude towards health & hygiene; a brighter smile on an individual might mean they take better care of themselves, or that they possess better overall health, and, in a Darwinian sense, these might be deemed attractive qualities in a partner. In modern culture, we are flooded with images of celebrities and their pearly whites which, presumably, helps to reinforce this dental attitude which has spanned 24 centuries. Regardless of their motivations, we at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the city of London  offer s first class teeth whitening for everybody – even people who like to read a bit too much in to things.

At home whitening

At Devonshire Square Dental Studio, we offer ‘at home’ whitening. This process requires patients to wear specially designed dental trays, at home, which will contain a specialised bleaching agent. These trays will need to be worn for roughly 6 hours a day, for between 5 and 10 days.  The effects of the treatments will differ depending on the brand of system used; some will experience a major change quickly, for others the improvements may be subtle. In most cases, this process is very effective. Certain stains, however, do not react particularly well to the bleaching process: Tetracycline staining, for instance, can take far longer to bleach than other forms of staining.

Possible side-effects

In the 18th century, teeth where whitened with nitric acid. This whitened teeth effectively, but it also helped to decay them quite quickly. Today the side-effects are less severe, but they still exist. If a strong concentration of bleach is used in the process, one may suffer chemical burns. Tooth sensitivity and the unnatural appearance of ‘over bleaching’ are other potential side effects. Tooth sensitivity is common, but usually subsides after 3 days.

Patients In London Don’t Have To Live With Stained Teeth Any Longer

October 13th, 2012

Over time our teeth may discolour as we age, with food consumption and habits such as smoking. Genetics may play a role too where some people develop purple-looking teeth. What can be done about stained and discoloured teeth?

Cosmetic dentists have recognised the impact that stained and discoloured teeth have on a person’s appearance and confidence in self-image. Therefore, they have developed techniques and technologies for enhancing tooth shade for a bright and beautiful smile.

Nowadays, anyone, not just celebrities, may have star-like natural beauty. Here are some cosmetic dentistry solutions to whiten teeth for a stunning smile:

Dental shade scale – Dental professionals use dental shade scales to match the right shade of tooth colour unique to a person’s teeth colour. Individuals may also choose a whitening shade for their teeth.

Power teeth whitening – Dentists now provide in-clinic power teeth whitening within an hour using advanced light-curing technologies. The teeth are cleansed and a whitening gel is applied to the surface. The LED light then cures the gel for fast and effective teeth whitening results.

Home teeth whitening – Custom-made trays containing whitening gel may be prepared by a dentist for home application. Dentist-supervised teeth whitening is a safer option and avoids over-bleaching teeth. The whitening results are not as fast as with in-clinic power teeth whitening, but teeth are whiter within a week or two of use for six hours per day. Some choose to combine power and home teeth whitening for longer lasting results.

Porcelain veneers – An alternative to teeth whitening, porcelain or composite veneers mask tooth colour and enhance teeth shape and alignment. Veneers are an ideal choice for those wishing to combine teeth whitening and teeth straightening for mild dental misalignment, or for those with genetic dental discolouration.

Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening Treatment for Patients in London

August 9th, 2012

Teeth whitening treatment is the practice of restoring teeth to their natural, whiter colour.  Lots of factors affect the hue and colour of a person’s teeth as they age, from natural decay and alterations in the chemical structure to more first hand influences like smoking and the consumption of certain foods and drinks which can stain the teeth. Aesthetically this can be quite bothersome and in a lot of cases can make a person feel self-conscious or lack esteem, especially in the growing age of the Hollywood smile.

There are however pros and cons in regards to teeth whitening, and as with all decisions, it’s important to weigh them up before jumping straight in. After all, this is your mouth we’re talking about.

What are the pros and cons?

Pros:

  • A boost in esteem; having a winning smile that you are proud to show off can do wonders for your self-conscience, leading to a happier, healthy outlook in life.
  • A Simple process; with many at-home teeth whitening kits and over the counter products, teeth whitening can be both simple and affordable.
  • Safe Treatment; with dental assisted teeth whitening procedures there is little to no risk. Though of course, still be sensible and avoid non-professionals and the inexperienced.

Cons:

  • Weakening of the enamel; unfortunately, some of the chemicals used in certain teeth whitening procedures can weaken the enamel over time leading to problems.
  • Side effects; a downside to teeth whitening is that you might experience sensitive teeth, sore gums and other symptoms.

These pros and cons should definitely give you something to think about if you are indeed considering teeth whitening and it’s important to make sure that you don’t decide on anything until you are 100% confident in the decision that you have made. We have teeth whitening treatments and Devonshire Square Dental Clinic in London so contact us today for more information.

Wedding Day Smiles-Whitening Your Teeth in Time for the Big Day in the City of London

May 10th, 2012

There are many things to prepare for before a wedding. In the run-up to the big event, with all the stress and anxiety that comes with it, there is no need to feel even more worried due to your smile. Wedding photos are how people remember their important day, and the best thing you can do for your wedding day snaps is to show off your beautiful smile! If you are feeling self-conscious about your teeth, or that your smile is not worth showing off, tooth whitening treatments may be the perfect way to restore your confidence, so that looking happy in photos of the big occasion need not be a worry.

Why do teeth discolour?

Tooth whitening involves bleaching the teeth after they have become darker or stained. This discolouration is, to some degree, a natural part of growing older, as the mineral structure of teeth changes due to aging. However, the discolouration of teeth can be increased by smoking, as well as consuming certain foods and drinks, particularly tea and coffee. It can also be caused by bacterial build-up, as a result of poor oral hygiene.

How does teeth whitening work?

The ‘at-home whitening’ procedure involves the use of custom-built bleaching trays for your teeth. These should be worn on the teeth for around six hours a day, for between five and fourteen days, in order to see the best results – so some preparation time is needed before the wedding day. The chemicals used are oxidising agents, which can penetrate tooth enamel, due to its porous nature, in order to bleach internal stains. Eventually, the dentine (the tooth layer under enamel) also becomes bleached. The effects of this can last several months for teeth whitening patients in the City of London. The whitening agents should lighten your teeth, but not affect the colour of fillings or most other materials used to restore teeth.

The first day of winter is soon to arrive. Will your teeth look as white as the snow?

November 16th, 2011

As we head towards winter at an ever-increasing pace we are unified by a hope that it is going to be a white winter. Unfortunately, nowadays a white Christmas is not a guarantee and we count ourselves lucky if there is 2cm of snow on the ground. The good news is that you can take heed of the dilemma and guarantee a white Christmas with a visit to the dentist.

You can make your teeth as white as freshly laid snow this year by receiving a professional teeth-whitening treatment. Today there are amazing techniques that are virtually painless with great results and for the most impressive results people often opt for laser teeth whitening. The procedure is painless and can dramatically improve the shades of your teeth. Most procedures can be completed in just one hour. The procedure requires no bleach and the results can last for up to a year. By using a combination of high oxygen whiting solutions and laser technology your teeth can be 8 shades lighter in just one session.

There are also a multitude of teeth beaching kits that are available in shops and salons and the technology in this area has also improved dramatically over recent years. These kits are much cheaper than the laser option; however, they don’t provide the same intensely white results or last as long.

So treat your smile to a white Christmas this year. You may still see the results the same time next year and at least you know something will be white during the festive season.

Your City of London dentist takes a look at some concerns over teeth whitening

November 2nd, 2011

We all want to have teeth white enough to show off proudly but recent research has shone a light on the lengths some people will go to achieve a bright shine.

London cosmetic dentists attend dental school for years, studying to perfect their area of expertise before gaining a full dental licence. However, it is now possible for hairdressers and beauty consultants to attend a one day course to gain a licence qualifying them to legally whiten teeth.

Cases of botched teeth whitening procedures are on the rise and dentists and doctors both agree that it can be linked to this unsafe qualification.

Dentists are now urging patients to avoid going to beauty salons and clinics to receive this popular but potentially dangerous procedure and to only use fully qualified professionals.

When done correctly teeth whitening is perfectly safe and dentists train for years to gain ability, confidence and experience before performing the treatment. Burns to gums and other oral tissue can be severe if whitening is not carried out correctly and it is often the same dentists who are warning against the use of beauty clinics that have to examine and treat these burns.

While doctors and dentists are calling for a ban on day long courses that can give beauty therapists and others the legal ability to whiten teeth, Devonshire Square Dental Studio would like to ensure patients that staff at our prestigious dental studio are fully trained in this area of expertise and are chosen for their remarkable skills and abilities, both at their specific job and when it comes to interacting with patients; treating patients to the level of kindness and professional demeanour that you deserve.

Your City of London Dentist Tells You The 5 Don’ts of Oral Health

October 3rd, 2011

When compared to general health, the average knowledge people have of oral health is surprisingly low. While some ‘Dental Don’ts’ may be obvious, others may surprise you and there are a number of general rules and sets of advice that many would be wise to take note of.

Don’t ‘Overdo’ Dental Whitening

While it may seem obvious, many people complain of pain or over-sensitivity in their teeth due to the overuse of dental whitening. A dentist will advise against frequent teeth whitening visits, but due to the easy availability of home whitening kits many people may still be able to overuse such treatments, leading to problems with pain and sensitivity.

Don’t Neglect your Dentist

Primarily your dentist is there to check your oral health and do what he or she can if they find something amiss. However, they can’t help their patients in this way if they don’t come for checkups! Even if you don’t believe you have any dental problems it is highly recommended that you visit your dentist for a check up at least once every 6 months.

Stay Away From Tobacco!

When people think of the damage caused by tobacco, they may immediately spring to lung and throat cancer. However, tobacco –both smoking and chewing- can not only lead to lung cancer but also gum disease and oral cancer, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Don’t Forget the Tongue!

The tongue is often forgotten when brushing our teeth, however, it is essential to our oral health. The surface of the tongue is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, making it potentially dangerous to a person’s overall health. Plaque and bacteria that has been removed from the teeth and gums by brushing can be easily replaced by any that remain on the tongue. Brushing to the back of the tongue can make many people gag, however, there are specific devices on the market primarily for the purpose of cleaning tongues.

Don’t Rush

When brushing (especially for children) it can be tempting to rush. Whether this is because you’re eager for bed after a long day or are running late in the mornings, it can be tempting to give your teeth only a quick once over before finishing. Don’t! You may have an extremely busy schedule for the day, but everyone can spare an extra 2 minutes in the mornings and evenings to make sure you have a healthy mouth. However, brushing too vigorously can also be damaging, so a balance between not brushing enough and brushing too much does need to be established.

The rise of cosmetic dentistry

June 17th, 2011

Many people are deciding that their dental health needs improving. This could be choosing to have a filling they were unsure of having due to one reason or the other, or finally booking an appointment with their dentist which they were avoiding from going to. However, for some they have decided that it is the look of their teeth that they want to improve.

Cosmetic dentistry and its many forms

Unlike what colour they are now our teeth were born natural white, which looked unbelievably healthy in our school photos. However, whether this is thanks to drinking coffee or consuming tobacco products, they change colour and develop a yellowish tinge which is not to everyone’s liking. With teeth whitening products that have instantaneous results, this very popular dental treatment is increasing in popularity all the time.

The other types of cosmetic dentistry

As well as teeth whitening, there are also veneers. Applied to the front of a person’s tooth using very strong glue, they make the tooth look white unlike its previous colour. If one tooth is discoloured this can help change the colour of this singular tooth.

Unlike their silver versions, white fillings blend in with the natural colour of the tooth which can make any filling present in the tooth literally invisible. Silver fillings are prone to staining surrounding teeth but white fillings do not do this and leaves the tooth looking as natural looking as possible.

One more to consider

Just like white fillings when compared to silver fillings, Invisalign offer a person the chance to have braces without the metallic “train track” brace, which is very noticeable and might affect a person’s confidence. Invisalign technology uses clear aligners to straighten the teeth which allows for the confidence of the person to improve as they won’t be self-conscious of having a metallic brace attached to the front of their teeth.
