London dentists give expert advice on protecting your mouth with mouth guards

Mouth guards from London dentists offer comprehensive protection against oral injuries

Your mouth can be at risk in a number of situations and severely injuring your teeth and gums can be extremely painful and require invasive surgery to rectify.  If you indulge in physical sports such as rugby, lacrosse or American football or enjoy mountain biking or gymnastics, it is best if you wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth.  By doing so you lessen your chances of breaking, chipping or even losing a tooth.

The most basic level of protection is offered by stock mouth guards with you can buy in sports shops.  These are affordable but won’t protect your mouth comprehensively from all threats.  As they are not tailor made, they can often be uncomfortable to wear.  So called ‘boil and bite’ mouth guards are more comfortable because you can mould them to your mouth by biting them when they have been submerged in boiling water and become malleable.

By far the best protection that you can give your teeth if you are participating in a physical sport is to get your dentist to fit you a mouth guard.  Moulds of your teeth will be taken so that impressions can then be formed.  From these impressions a technician will fabricate your own personalised mouth guard.  These are far more comfortable to wear but are more expensive.

It is better to spend the small amount of money on a mouth guard than to sustain a painful injury which might require expensive surgery to rectify in any case.

London City dentists prevent gum disease

Early diagnosis of gum disease at London City dentists preserve patients’ oral hygiene

Did you know that around three quarters of those over thirty five years of age in the United Kingdom are currently suffering from gum disease in some form?  And did you know that gum disease is actually a greater cause of tooth loss than tooth decay itself?  Gums need to be taken care of just as much as teeth to make sure that you don’t suffer the pain and indignity of losing a tooth or teeth.

The most common type of gum disease is called gingivitis.  It is not serious in itself but, if left to progress, can lead to worse problems.  Gingivitis is signified by reddening of the gums and sometimes bleeding during brushing and pain while eating.  It is easily avoided by pursuing the recommended routine of brushing and flossing twice a day, every day.

Periodontitis is a more serious condition which can occur if gingivitis is not dealt with.  This is where the danger of tooth loss comes in as periodontitis is an extreme inflammation of the gums which eventually leads to teeth becoming loose in their housings and falling out.

You can be vigilant for signs of gum disease at home by looking for reddening to the gums and being aware of any pain you experience when eating.  Persistent breath or a metallic taste can indicate that gum disease is present.  In extreme cases, sudden weight loss or a feeling that your teeth don’t quite fit as well as they used to can mean that gum disease has taken hold.
