The art of extraction

June 22nd, 2011

Even when we least expect it, our teeth might have to receive dental treatment that is not always to our satisfaction. However, this is a necessary evil as our teeth are very important to us and need as much care and attention as possible. With the recent advances in dental technology, there is one type of treatment which many dread but help is at hand if you need it. This is extractions and there are several categories of this.

What types of extraction are there?

General extractions are exactly what it says. With the reasons behind the tooth needed extracting including gum disease, this is needed when there is no other option but for it to be removed and no common medication can help you in relieving that pain.

If the patient is not in pain, orthodontic extractions might be required. Teeth which are yet to appear might need some assistance in doing this as relatively healthy teeth will need to be removed so these other teeth can appear without causing the patient additional pain and discomfort.

Orthodontic extractions are normally carried out under local anaesthetic but surgical removal might be required. Using a technique known as “luxation”, a sharp instrument is prised on either side of the tooth and great force is then used in order to remove the selected tooth.

Wisdom tooth removal

For the large majority of those who need their wisdom teeth removing, extractions are common place here. The lower wisdom teeth have two roots, with the upper teeth having three roots. But this needn’t be as excruciating as it suggests. The roots for wisdom teeth are normally easily locatable but it is always recommended that you speak with a qualified dentist about this procedure as they will ease any worries you have before treatment begins.

Crown lengthening and what it can do for you

May 11th, 2011

Crown lengthening is a very common dental procedure, which is carried out when a tooth is damaged or decayed and needs repairing. The aim of the procedure is to expose a larger portion of the crown of the tooth; this is done by removing some of the gum or bone tissue.

Crown lengthening is usually carried out if you need a crown but there is not enough tooth exposed to accommodate a new crown. This sometimes happens if a tooth breaks at the gum line or the patient has a ‘gummy smile’, meaning that their gums cover a larger portion of the teeth than usual.

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure and you will be referred to a periodontist, a specialist in gum disease. The periodontist will examine your mouth and arrange a date for the procedure to take place; you will also be advised to have a cleaning treatment, to remove plaque and tartar from the mouth before you have your operation.

Crown lengthening is usually carried out under local anaesthetic; the procedure may take a while, especially if more than one tooth is affected; after the gums have been prepared, a temporary crown will be attached and this will stay in place until the gums have healed fully and a new crown can be placed. After the procedure, you may experience pain and discomfort but this should subside very quickly if you take painkillers; your dentist will also advise you to use a special mouth rinse and talk to you about cleaning your teeth. As you will have stitches in your gum, it is important to try and avoid brushing near the gums instead you can use a rinse or irrigator to remove food particles. It is advisable to avoid hard foods for a while after the surgery, as this may be painful.

London City dentists effectively secure dentures with mini implants

Secure your dentures with mini implants from London City dentists

You can lose a tooth for a number of reasons, whether through an accident or as result of poor oral hygiene which has led to decay.  Whatever the reason it is vital that you have it replaced.  An incomplete set of teeth will only make eating and drinking more difficult and your teeth might start to shift into the gaps left behind by your vacant tooth.

Partial dentures are an option but for a permanent solution, you might consider having dentures secured in your mouth using mini implants.  These implants act as the root part of your missing tooth and comprise a predrilled socket into which a pontic (false tooth) can be secured.  Mini implants are extremely stable because they are placed tight with the jaw bone so that they will eventually osseointegrate or fuse together.

An x-ray or CT scan will be necessary to assess the area properly and then, under local anaesthetic, your dentist will make a small incision in your jaw.  This is where the mini implant will be placed before the jaw is stitched back up.  While your mouth is healing you will wear a temporary replacement tooth.  Once your dentist is satisfied that the area is healed and the mini implant is stable, your permanent replacement tooth will be attached to the implant.

Mini implants truly represent a long term solution to tooth loss.  The replacement teeth attached to the implants can be treated just like normal teeth and cleaned easily so you needn’t worry when you are eating.

Liverpool Street London dentists replace lost teeth with dental implants

Dental implants from Liverpool Street London dentists effectively replace lost teeth

Tooth loss is possible through an accident or as a result of gum disease or tooth decay.  It is very important that lost teeth are replaced so that the mouth can function as normal.  Eating and drinking might be more difficult without a full set of teeth and it can look unsightly having a gap where there ought to be teeth.  A long-lasting solution to tooth loss is to have dental implants installed.

Dental implants give a particularly secure foundation for false teeth.  They act as the lost root part of the missing tooth, into which a pontic is screwed.  Your dentist will prepare the area by removing debris and then, under local anaesthetic, a small incision will be made.  This is where the implant is placed, close to the jaw bone so that it will ultimately undergo osseointegration, a process of fusion with the bone.

This fusion gives the false tooth an extremely durable foundation and the titanium which dental implants are made from is a very hard-wearing substance.  You can treat your replacement tooth, anchored using a dental implant, just like you would a normal tooth.

Dental implants can even be used to replace a whole set of lost teeth.  In this case, dental implants would be placed at specific points in the mouth and then attached to dental bridges.  For some people this is preferable to removable dentures which can be messy and slip out while talking or eating.

Liverpool Street London dentists offer effective root canal treatment

October 12th, 2010

Root canal treatment available from Liverpool Street London dentists

If your tooth has become damaged internally then you may need root canal treatment to restore its health and functionality.  Teeth are in fact hollow and inside they contain vital nerves, arteries, veins and tissues.  The hollows inside of teeth are called pulp chambers and, if there is a problem there, the best way to enter is through the root canals which carry the nerves into the tooth

The inside of your tooth can become damaged as a result of a severe accident to the mouth or because of extreme tooth decay.  Root canal treatment might be necessary if the pulp tissue has become infected and an abscess is forming.  Symptoms of this include aching in your teeth which won’t go away, tender or swelling gums or a tooth that has become noticeably darker than the rest.  If you experience any of these things you should report them to your Liverpool Street London dentist as you may have a problem with your pulp chamber and require root canal treatment.

The aim if root canal treatment is to drill into the tooth, remove the pulp from the chamber and then disinfect it.  This will require x-rays and local anaesthetic.  The tooth will be sealed up with a temporary filling and your dentist will monitor it to check that infection has not returned and the root canals remain free of debris.  A permanent filling be fitted once your dentist satisfied that the pulp chamber and root canals are healthy.
