Brushing Your Tongue for Better Smelling Breath and Better Overall Health in Central London

June 9th, 2012

A general oral hygiene routine is said to involve brushing, flossing and using mouthwash, however, to really ensure that your mouth is completely clean you may want to incorporate tongue cleansing into your regime.

Why clean my tongue?

The majority of bacteria in your mouth is found towards the back of the tongue, which means that even when you have brushed and flossed every inch of your teeth bacteria can soon return, making its way from your tongue.

How does a tongue scraper work?

A tongue scraper is a simple device, made up hard plastic, which you run across the surface of the tongue. The scraper then pulls away the debris and harmful dental film that rests across the tongue. Doing this every morning and especially in the evening will help prevent bacteria from the tongue from tainting the rest of the mouth.

You can also use special brushes or just a general toothbrush (kept separately from the toothbrush you use on your teeth) to brush away the harmful bacterial film.

Tongue scraping is also a great idea if you wish to keep you breath smelling fresh, as the bacteria on your tongue is the main cause of bad breath.

What else should I do to keep my mouth fresh and clean?

Another under-rated dental hygiene habit is flossing. Flossing removes the debris and plaque that has settled between the teeth, which brushing alone is unable to reach. If this debris is left to settle it can lead to numerous oral health problems, including tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss.

If is therefore important to do more than just brush your teeth, in order to keep a fresh and healthy mouth.

If you would like an extra level of cleaning we also provide dental hygienist sessions at the practice, which can have your teeth and gums thoroughly clean for a gleaming, healthy mouth.

Don’t Like Flossing? Why Not Try Using an Interdental Brush in the City of London?

The importance of cleaning between teeth

We all know the importance of brushing our teeth, but many of us may neglect to clean in between our teeth, in addition to brushing the surfaces with a normal toothbrush. Over the course of the day, as we eat, tiny bits of food can become stuck in the small gaps between our teeth. It is essential that we try to remove this debris, as leaving it can cause several oral hygiene issues. Leaving food in our mouths causes a build-up of bacteria as the food specks begin to rot, which in turn can lead to a build-up of plaque. Bad breath is another problem that comes from not cleaning the teeth, and eventually, tooth decay can occur.

Using an interdental brush

Since normal toothbrushes cannot reach the gaps between teeth, it is necessary to clean here using floss – although a possibly more convenient option is an interdental toothbrush. An interdental brush is a very small, fine toothbrush, held between the thumb and first finger, which can be used to clean the gaps between the teeth. With its small head and bristles, an interdental brush can easily reach parts of the mouth that bigger toothbrushes cannot. Interdental brushes come in different sizes, and are most effective for different areas of the mouth, using a finer brush at the front, and larger brush at the back. Use a gentle twisting motion to get the brush in between the teeth, and gently pull the brush out again to remove any plaque or debris that may be there. Repeat this until the space is cleaned. Twisting the brush into a banana-shaped curved may be more effective for cleaning back teeth. Rinse the brush after use, to make sure it is clean for the next time it’s used.

Patients in the City of London can keep their smiles clean and healthy using interdental brushes.

Patients from London Consider the Correct Oral Healthcare Items

Toothpaste

If your teeth have a tendency to form plaque or tartar, you should ideally be choosing toothpaste that helps fight this condition. Within the available brands, choose one that is evaluated and approved by the appropriate government agency. This becomes all the more important as there are a number of brands that will do the job, but do not adhere to or fall within the accepted levels scientifically. Choose one that has fluoride content as it helps in preventing cavities. Finally, it comes down to a personal choice of taste and feel of the toothpaste. If the toothpaste is irritating to your cheeks or lips, causes sensitivity to the teeth or your mouth feels irritated after using it, change the toothpaste.

Toothbrush

Once you have your toothpaste, then you need to choose the right toothbrush. Dentists recommend the use of a toothbrush with soft bristles, particularly for those people who have sensitive teeth or gums. There is a misconception that hard bristles help in the removal of tartar and stains. This is not so, as sustained use can even cause damage to the teeth. Choose a toothbrush that is contoured to the alignment of your teeth and gums. Be sure to select a toothbrush that has a small head and can clean one or two teeth at a time. The toothbrush should be replaced every three months or when the bristles begin to look frayed or start spreading out.

Mouthwash

Most people use a mouth rinse too. This also should be one that contains fluoride which helps prevent cavities. However, it is not advisable for children below six years to use mouthwash, as they may swallow the rinse. You can always check with your London dentist on what will work best for you. It makes choosing the right oral product easier.

Importance of Sterilisation Procedures at Your London Dentist

April 14th, 2012

As we all know, our mouth is home for many microorganisms and these have the potential to cause dental problems if not monitored. The growth and spread of these organisms should be effectively checked, which is when dental sterilisation becomes so important.

In most cases the bacteria found in the mouth originate from the blood stream of a person. The other way bacteria are spread is from a sore throat or a cold. If the bacteria of one person make it to another person it can become even more dangerous and can create serious complications.

London dentists use many different instruments to complete dental procedures. As these instruments enter the mouth of a person they are exposed to a host of microorganisms, which is why it becomes very important to effectively sterilise instruments.

There are three major methods that can be used to sterilise dental instruments. The first is Dry, which involves heating the dental instruments to a very high temperature. Most of the harmful bacteria are not able to survive high temperatures. The second method that can be used to get rid of bacteria is Steam. This method involves a combination of high temperature and pressure to kill all kinds of microorganisms. The time taken for this method depends on the pressure used, as the higher the pressure the less time it takes. The third method use is heated chemicals, where the gas formed by the heating of a mixture of chemicals is used to sterilise the instruments.

While all the above mentioned method are very effective ways of getting rid of bacteria, immersing these instruments into disinfecting solution before using the advanced sterilising methods should not be overlooked. Traces of blood or other organic matter should be thoroughly removed and while handling a patient the dentist should wash their hands with soap or disinfecting gel and use gloves. This is not only beneficial for the patient, but for the dentist as well.

Will Your Smile make You an April’s Fool in London?

April 1st, 2012

A smile is a major source of non-verbal communication for people in London. It expresses thanks, appreciation and friendliness, besides exhibiting inner happiness. While the origins of a smile lie deep within us, we can do our bit to make it beautiful. This is not the result of a one-time task, but something that we should build into our very lives as a matter of choice.

Admittedly most mornings are rushed and you just want to get on. But care and time should be spent brushing your teeth. Well maintained teeth sparkle with a beauty of their own and this does not happen overnight. It is the result of painstaking effort to maintain what you have. Neglect does not show up immediately and in most cases we don’t notice it, as it is very gradual.

However, this can mean that once the damage is done, it is irreversible and may require invasive treatment, like root canal surgery or a tooth extraction. Some people are afraid to smile openly, as they are quite ashamed and conscious of the bad state their teeth are in. If you can spend a few extra minutes keeping the bacteria and plaque away, it goes a long way into helping you keep that great smile.

An aspect of tooth maintenance that we neglect is brushing our teeth after every meal, particularly after snacking on food that contains sugar and carbs. The bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and soon spread to the teeth and gums. The best thing to do is to time the consumption with the cleaning of your teeth.

If your teeth are crooked, get an orthodontist to straighten them, as aligned teeth works wonder in creating a wonderful smile and are much easier to keep clean and free of decay.
