Is your dentist the most eligible Bachelor in town?

July 18th, 2011

It goes without saying that your job can say an awful lot about you – a teacher is never disinterested and reckless; a lawyer is rarely shy and mild-mannered; a builder probably prefers egg and chips over caviar every day of the week. It is stereotypical but these things became stereotypes for a reason. In the same way when we think of a dentist we imagine intelligence, wealth, sensitivity and not forgetting…a dashing smile!

Is it truly so, ladies?

There are few women who would turn down a handsome man with intelligence, wealth, sensitivity and a smile to make you swoon and this could be the reason why the women of online dating site, match.com, have named dentists among the most desirable men on the market.

The online study used the information provided by women signed up to the dating site to look at which professions are most sought after in a partner by women. Unsurprisingly the results suggest that wealth and status still remain the most attractive qualities that a man can have even though women themselves have as much opportunity as men to attain these qualities in today’s society.

Ooh err!

The top five professions voted most attractive to women are: executive or management positions; dentists, doctors or vets; lawyers; teachers and the self-employed. It is clear to see the pattern in these professions and the results make it very clear what still makes a man attractive to a woman.

The results seem to say that women desire a man who has power, status and authority and a man who has desire and ambition to succeed. A woman still needs her Alpha male!

What has developed with modern society though is the attractiveness of a man that can show his sensitive and caring side. The ‘new man’ is a new phenomenon and even though these results illustrate that the dominant male is still very much desired it goes without saying that teachers, doctors, vets and dentists have that extra quality, that caring quality that in the past would have been left to the women.

So, it seems that your dentist has it all – he’s intelligent, he’s powerful, he’s rich, he’s sensitive and he probably cares an awful lot about his oral hygiene. He’s your perfect match! So next time you go for that check-up be sure to look past that drill and pay a little more attention to what might be hiding underneath that white coat.

Root canal treatment from London City dentists the easy and effective way

Learn more about root canal treatment with the dentists of London City

The prospect of root canal treatment is hardly appealing, as anyone who has previously experienced with this will tell you. A procedure used to fix and save decaying or infected teeth, it involves the removal of the damaged tissue from the inside of a tooth. Once the pulp underneath the layers is exposed, there is a high chance of inflammation and possible necrosis (pulp death) – as well as severe damage or pain to the tooth.

Root canal treatment can require one or more appointments, and be carried out by a dental practitioner or endodontist (root canal specialist). Firstly a full oral examination (including radiographs) will be carried out and if necessary, the use of a local anaesthetic. A latex sheet is positioned around the tooth to ensure the area is kept dry and clean followed by an opening made at the top of the tooth. Next, the pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and the root canals are then cleaned and shaped in a way that will allow them to be securely sealed. Once the root canals are filled and sealed, the opening in the top of the tooth is filled with a temporary seal – then with future appointments, the progress of the root canal and filling can be monitored and adjusted should further treatment be needed.

Even though the pulp has been removed, your tooth will still be alive due to being nourished by its surrounding tissues. Once permanently restored, as long as proper oral care is maintained then the tooth has a high chance of keeping healthy. Your dentist will provide you with the appropriate aftercare following the operation, but you should also visit your dentist regularly to ensure longevity of your teeth and good oral hygiene.

Dry socket treatment at your London City dentist

February 16th, 2011

When you sit down and really think about it, our teeth play a very important part in our lives.

Not only are they one of the first things people notice about us but they also determine a national stereotype in many people’s eyes. Take the Americans, for example. They are often quoted as being obsessed by an image that those living in Britain have an unsightly grin, with each and every tooth about as straight as a circle.

The amount of people receiving dental treatment not just in the UK is phenomenal but there are some occasions when the health of some people’s teeth is not quite up to scratch and is in fact very poor. This could be down to a number of dental problems which could include gingivitis, yellow teeth or even dry socket; the latter of which can prove to be incredibly painful.

Dry socket can occur after a tooth extraction. When a blood clot is removed from the area which has received surgery, this can expose the gum and many problems can materialise. When a socket causes pain due to the loss of blood which then exposes the open wound to the air, fluids among many things can cause a distasteful smell coming from the wound which is not pleasant for neither the person themselves or the people around them.

So what factors contribute towards this? Those who do not follow the professional medical advice given to them are prime examples of thus; those who smoke before they were meant to or applying pressure via the tongue are such instances of what can go wrong after what is already a painful and uncomfortable experience

If you are suffering from dry socket, you might be wondering to yourselves what is it that I can do to prevent dry socket happening to me? Staying away from cigarettes or other forms of smoking is a start, as is rinsing your mouth excessively but if you are seeking a form of treatment there are methods for this. By rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash and eating soft foods are just some of the ideas for treating dry socket but there is always your trusty dentist for further tips.

Regular dental check ups at your London City dentist

February 14th, 2011

In 2002, a dental study found that 25 percent of all children observed were victims of untreated dental caries or cavities.

In fact, dental caries are one of the most common preventable dental ailments affecting an increasing number of children and adults. Regular check ups with your dentist or hygienist are necessary to prevent the development of preventable maladies including cavities, which if allowed to worsen may lead to rectification through a root canal or, in worst cases, tooth loss.

In 2010, the BBC reported that the number of children suffering from preventable illnesses was of epidemic proportion. In addition to this staggering statistic was the reality that these preventable illnesses cost the NHS millions of pounds annually.

When it comes to our health, a popular approach to take is the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” mentality. However, this passive attitude toward our wellbeing can lead to greater problems in the long term. Many dental ailments, for instance, go unnoticed until they reach their zenith. A check up with your dentist every six months can ward off potential dental maladies before they become unbearable. Consequently, regular check ups can ensure that problems with your teeth, gums and mouth get rectified before they are allowed to worsen.

A typical visit to your dental hygienist usually takes less than 15 minutes and consists of your dentist checking your teeth, gums and mouth, during which they’ll inquire about your general oral health and whether you’ve experienced any problems with your teeth, gums and mouth.

During your check-up, your dentist may provide advice on your eating habits, on damaging activities such as excessive drinking and smoking, which can affect your oral wellbeing. They may also go over the proper methods for teeth cleaning and oral hygiene.

If necessary, your dentist may schedule you in for follow up treatments including fillings for cavities, teeth cleaning, scaling and polishing and any other treatment you may need.

Dental emergencies treated at your London City dentist

What You Can Do in the Face of a Dental Emergency

Just like with minor medical emergencies, some injuries and illnesses are treatable at home and do not require the immediate attention of emergency services workers. The same is true of some minor dental injuries and ailments, although there are times when contacting your dentist is essential.

A list of common dental maladies that can be initially dealt with at home include toothache, bitten tongues or lips and particles caught between your teeth. These dental injuries can be dealt with at home before escalating to the level of professional care.

If you have a toothache, you should rinse your mouth using warm water and gently floss around the affected tooth to remove food particles. You may also want to use mouthwash or gels to help relieve pain. If the pain persists, contact your dentist immediately.

Bitten tongues and lips can be cared for by wiping the area clean with a damp cloth. If bleeding persists, seeking medical help is advised. If food or other particles become lodged between your tooth, you should try flossing and only flossing to remove said particle. Never wedge any sharp object between your teeth. Contact your dentist if you are not able to free the trapped particle.

More serious injuries such as broken jaws, tears and punctures to the cheeks, gums and teeth and the loss of teeth associated with injury and trauma should be considered and treated as emergencies. Professional dental help should be sought.

Overcome dental phobia with Liverpool Street London dentists

December 24th, 2010

Liverpool Street London dentists signal end to dental phobia with new approaches to dentistry

The first step towards keeping a healthy mouth is to make sure you brush and floss at least twice a day.  This helps ensure that plaque is not allowed to build up and attack the enamel which protects your teeth.  But alongside this it is very important that you visit your dentist every six months to have your mouth examined by an expert.  This is so that any potential conditions can be stopped in their tracks before they develop into something worse.

However, many people feel anxious about visiting their dentist all.  This is a condition that is often known as dental phobia and there are a number of causes for it.  Some people are afraid of going to the dentist because of a fear of needles, for example.  Such anxieties might be rooted in childhood and can be difficult to overcome.  But it is worth bearing in mind that, should you require an injection, pain free gels are now commonplace to make injections far less uncomfortable.

If you have not visited the dentist in a number of years you might feel embarrassed about the state that your teeth are in.  You should remember though that dentists have seen it all.  They are trained to help you with any oral issues you might have and really just want to help you out.

If you have experienced a dentist who is not sympathetic to your problems that can put you off visiting again too.  The feeling that you are not being listened to can be very frustrating and mean that you are loathed to return to the same dental practice.  In such a case you ought to seek out a different dentist as communication is the cornerstone of a good relationship.
