New Patient Consultations For Patients In The Heart Of London

May 11th, 2013

At Devonshire Square Dental Studio we value our existing patients and warmly welcome new patients. If you are interested in joining our London studio as a new patient, we offer a New Patient Consultation to make the process easier and most beneficial in meeting your needs.

How the New Patient Consultation works

Once you get in touch with us either by phone, email or in person, a member of our friendly team will book a consultation for you at your convenience. The initial New Patient Consultation is to meet you, learn about you, listen to your needs and introduce you to our Dental Studio.

During this process, we register you as a new patient and provide you with information about our full range of consultations and services that include Cosmetic Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Smile Gallery, Oral Health, Facial Rejuvenation and Emergency Care.

Through a Comprehensive Evaluation we discuss your past and current medical history, assess your oral health, and discuss your concerns. The Comprehensive Evaluation lasts about an hour, costs £150 and includes a full diagnostic assessment with X-rays. The details of the diagnosis and treatment options are outlined for you in a written treatment plan.

Written treatment plan

At Devonshire Square Dental Studio we provide each patient with their own written treatment plan that includes diagnosis, treatment recommendations and choices, benefits, risks and costs. Any additional treatment planning consultations for complex care are included within the cost of the initial fee at no further charge.

Choices in consultations

To meet your needs, we offer a selection of consultations, some of which are complimentary such as with the treatment coordinator for discussion of treatment options. During consultation, our dentist involves you in your diagnosis and treatment choices, listens to your needs and answers any questions that you have.

Dental Emergencies At Devonshire Square Dental Studio In The Heart Of London

April 27th, 2013

At Devonshire Square Dental Studio we understand that accidents can happen at any time in any place and this is why we offer emergency dental appointments every day. If you call us needing emergency dental treatment, we endeavour to see you as quickly as possible.

Types of dental emergency

There are many different types of dental emergency, including:

  • Severe dental pain or toothache
  • Dental fractures
  • Knocked out tooth
  • Severe cut lip
  • Jaw fracture

What to do in a dental emergency

If you have severe tooth pain, which is getting worse and not subsiding with over the counter pain relief, contact us and we will try to arrange an appointment for you as quickly as possible. One of the most common causes of serious dental pain is an abscess, which is a fluid-filled sac caused by a build-up of bacteria. You may find it beneficial to rinse your mouth with Corsodyl mouthwash.

If your tooth has been knocked out, try to find it and then rinse it (hold the crown section of the tooth rather than the root) and hold it between your cheek and your gum; if you manage to get to us within half an hour we may be able to re-implant the tooth.

If you have broken or fractured your tooth, call the practice as quickly as possible; if you experience swelling, holding a cold compress against your cheek can help to ease pain and inflammation. At Devonshire Square Dental Studio in London, we will advise you about treatment options once we know how severe the fracture is.

If you think you may have fractured your jaw, you will need to go to the nearest hospital with an Accident and Emergency department; your jaw will be X-rayed and then an appropriate course of treatment can be planned.

What To Do If You Have A Dental Injury For Patients In The City Of London

April 23rd, 2013

Accidents happen and unfortunately, dental injuries are fairly common. Thankfully, at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in London, we offer emergency dental appointments and we always endeavour to see clients as quickly as possible.

Types of dental injury

Dental injuries usually cause the teeth to be knocked out of position (known as extruded) or knocked out completely (known as evulsed). It is also common for the lips and gums to be damaged as a result of injury, which may cause bleeding.

Avulsion injuries

If your tooth is knocked out, it may be possible to save the tooth; contact us as quickly as possible and we will try to make an appointment for you as soon as we can. Hold the tooth by the crown section (avoid touching the roots) and rinse it gently to remove any dirt. Store the tooth in a glass of milk or place it between your cheek and gum; this is not advisable for children, as there is a risk of swallowing the tooth.

If you can see your dentist quickly enough, it may be possible to re-implant the tooth into its socket; however, if you leave it more than half an hour, it is unlikely that we will be able to save the tooth.

Extrusion injuries

If your tooth is knocked out of position, contact us for an appointment as quickly as possible. Hold a damp cloth against the tooth to keep it moist. If the tooth is fractured we will suggest an appropriate course of treatment based on the severity of the fracture.

Fractures

It is usually possible to repair mild and moderate fractures; however, if a tooth is severely fractured this may not be possible. Your dentist will recommend treatment options based on the severity of the fracture, but mild fractures may be patched up with composite material, while moderate fractures can usually be treated with a dental crown.

Tongue Detox Cleansing For Patients In The City Of London

April 18th, 2013

Most people are aware of the importance of cleaning their teeth, but have you ever spent time cleaning your tongue? Your tongue harbours thousands of bacteria and cleaning it on a regular basis helps to reduce the risk of decay and gum disease, as well as ensuring that your breath is fresh and clean.

Why is it important to clean the tongue?

Bacteria tend to gather around the tongue (especially at the back) and brushing your teeth alone is not sufficient to get rid of the bacteria and plaque in your mouth; rinsing with mouthwash can be very beneficial but you should also spend a couple of minutes cleaning your tongue. We recommend using the Tongue Detox Cleanser, which is a flexible plastic device, which is used to scrape bacteria off the tongue.

Around 80 per cent of cases of bad breath are linked to bacteria on the tongue and these bacteria can spread to other parts of the mouth, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease. Using a tongue cleaner removes bacteria from the tongue, which eliminates bad breath, a problem that can be embarrassing, and helps you to enjoy good oral health.

Smoking and your tongue

Some smokers find that they develop a thick film over the tongue as a result of smoking; using a tongue cleaner can remove this film, improving the odour of the breath and helping to reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

Advice about oral hygiene

If you need any advice about oral hygiene we are always on hand to give tips about brushing, flossing and rinsing, provide information about healthy eating and help with giving up smoking; we can also recommend oral hygiene products at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in London.

The Ins And Outs Of Root Canal Treatment For Patients In London

April 16th, 2013

Root canal treatment has a bad name, but it is actually a really important and effective treatment, which can save a tooth. Often, the alternative to root canal treatment is extraction and it is almost always better to save a tooth rather than remove it. At Devonshire Square Dental Studio in London we have many years of experience in performing root canal procedures and the treatment is much less daunting than it sounds.

About the root canals

The root canals are found in the root section of the tooth; they contain pulp, which is the living tissue of the tooth, including blood vessels and nerves. If the pulp becomes infected or damaged, this causes the tooth to start dying and the tooth becomes susceptible to abscesses, which are usually very painful.

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment may be recommended if a tooth is infected and the pulp tissue has become damaged; root canal treatment can help to prevent the spread of infection and the development of abscesses. If the tooth is left untreated the infection will spread and there may be no other option but to remove the tooth.

The procedure

Many patients are worried about having root canal treatment because they think it will be painful, but the tooth will be anaesthetised before the procedure to prevent any pain. Root canal treatment involves drilling into the tooth to access to root canals; the infected pulp tissue is removed and the tooth is cleaned thoroughly to ensure that no infected tissue is left behind; the root canals are then sealed using dental filling material to prevent the infection from spreading. A temporary crown is usually fitted and then the patient is advised to come back to the surgery to have the permanent crown fitted.

Root canal treatment should not be painful and we do everything we can to help you feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

Wisdom Tooth Complications For Patients In The City Of London

April 9th, 2013

Wisdom teeth are notoriously problematic and although most people do not have any issues during their emergency, there are some who experience severe pain. In such cases, it can be beneficial to remove the teeth rather than leaving them in place. Your dentist may advise you to have your wisdom tooth extracted should it be impacted or if it is causing severe pain. This may also be the case if the tooth is affecting neighbouring teeth or if it decays before fully erupting.

What does surgery involve?

The main reason people experience pain and discomfort when their wisdom teeth push through is a lack of space in the jaw. If there is not enough space for the teeth to develop they will start to grow against each other (become impacted). Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and it is often best to remove the affected tooth.

Some procedures are straightforward, while others are more complex. This depends on the location and position of the tooth. Your dentist will examine your mouth and then explain how the procedure will work. You will be anaesthetised during the procedure in order to prevent any pain and we also provide sedation for nervous patients.

What are the risks?

As with all surgical procedures wisdom tooth removal does carry risks. Your dentist will explain all the risks to you beforehand and the procedure will only be recommended when the benefits outweigh the risks.

Possible risks of wisdom tooth extraction include dry socket, a painful condition which occurs when the blood clot does not form over the tooth socket, and potential nerve damage. In some cases, during the procedure there can be contact between the mouth and the sinus after removal of the tooth. This is uncommon but if it does happen the patient will be prescribed medication. For more information on wisdom tooth complications please contact Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the heart of London.

Emergency Dentistry Hints And Tips For Patients In London

February 26th, 2013

A dental emergency can happen to anyone; we never know when one is going to occur and it is probable that you will require treatment immediately to fix it. This is why we offer emergency appointments to our patients. They can be necessary for a number of problems, highlighted below:

Knocked Out Teeth

If one of your teeth gets knocked out, you should gently lift it by the crown and clean it with care. Sometimes there will still be gum tissue so you can leave this and carefully return the tooth to the empty socket. Alternatively, place the tooth into a container filled with milk or hold it next to the cheek inside your mouth until you reach the dentist. You should make an appointment as soon as possible to increase the chance of saving the tooth.

Broken Teeth

If part of a tooth has been knocked out or damaged following an accident you should call immediately for an emergency appointment. In the meantime ease any pain or swelling by cleaning your mouth with warm water and using a cold compress on the swollen area.

Bitten Lip or Tongue

If you accidentally bite your tongue or lip so badly that you are bleeding and in pain, go to an emergency room as stitches may be necessary. This should only be done if the bleeding cannot be stopped with a cloth or compress.

Possible Broken Jaw

You may need to visit the hospital if your jaw has suffered an accident or injury. Swelling can be eased by using a cold cloth.

Toothache

Toothache can happen for a few reasons, but the most common one is dental infection. If it gets worse with time, rinsing your mouth with warm water can help, followed by gentle flossing to get rid of any food debris that can lead to infection. Corsodyl or another specialist mouthwash can help prevent excess bacteria. If the pain persists contact your dentist for treatment so that the infection does not spread.

If you do use painkillers to help with pain in gums and teeth, it is important not to allow them to rest on the gums as they will lead to burning in the gum tissue. If you would like to know more about the emergency dentistry services we offer please contact the team at Devonshire Dental Studio in the heart of London.

Why Join Our Membership Plan In The City Of London?

February 21st, 2013

We always try to ensure that our services are affordable and accessible to all our patients. We have thought long and hard about the best way to enhance our services and have now introduced a Practice Membership Plan for our patients. The aim of this plan is to safeguard your dental health and can help you avoid any dental issues by using the membership plan to visit us on a regular basis.

Preventative dentistry

A programme of preventative measures is important to keep your smile looking good and promote overall good dental health. Studies have shown that people who have regular appointments with hygienists and dentists will need less dental treatment in the long run than people who leave a long time before visiting their dentist. By looking after your teeth and gums you can avoid the need to pay for more expensive treatments such as fillings and crowns. The Practice Membership Plan includes regular appointments for check-ups, which can prevent the development of serious dental problems. A monthly Direct Debit means that the cost is spread out and avoids you paying large amounts at once. On top of this, the plan includes insurance for dental accidents and emergency insurance, giving you greater security.

Monthly payment plan

The dental accident and emergency insurance included in the monthly payments will leave you covered for damage caused to your teeth by an accident such as a trauma, blow or fall. It also includes any emergency treatment that you may require whilst away in any other part of the world or after normal surgery opening times (this is subject to policy limits). For more information on our membership plan contact us at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the heart of London.

What Are Interdental Brushes And How Are They Used For London Patients?

February 14th, 2013

Interdental brushes are a range of very thin brushes that can be used instead of flossing. The numerous sizes allow for the difference in size in gaps between teeth. You may need a few brushes of different sizes to suit different gaps.

Interdental brushes are used to get rid of surplus plaque food debris that gets stuck between teeth after we eat. This is often hard to get with a standard toothbrush as it can get stuck in tight gaps and lead to tooth decay of plaque is left to build up. An interdental brush is simple to use and will prevent plaque building up, keeping the mouth healthy and clean.

Removes food and plaque

An interdental brush is made up of small, thin fibres that get between the teeth to get rid of bits of food and plaque. In general, it is better to use different sized brushes for different areas in the mouth. If a particular brush does not fit you should either use a smaller brush or floss: do not force it into the gap. The brush should be gently inserted between the teeth with a twisting motion. It should then be carefully removed with a pulling movement and reinserted. The process should be repeated until the space is clean. Sometimes it will help to bend the brush so that the gap can be more efficiently cleaned.

After it has been used, the brush can be rinsed so that it can be used again. It is important however, that the same brush is used for no longer than a week.

Interdental brushes are extremely easy to use. They can even be used when you are out and about, at any time of day. In order to fully prevent a build-up of bacteria, it is recommended that you use an interdental brush at least 3 times each week at Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the city of London.
