Denture Treatment For Patients In London With Missing Teeth

April 13th, 2013

Dentures are a versatile treatment for missing teeth; they can replace entire sets of teeth (this is called a complete or full denture) or a small number of teeth (this is known as a partial denture).

About dentures

In most cases, dentures are made from acrylic resin, which is bonded to metal; the denture is made up of a palate and a set of false teeth, which are designed to look like natural teeth. Over the years, dentures have evolved and modern dentures are very lifelike, as well as being comfortable, functional and light.

Dentures are custom-made so that they fit the contours and shape of the individual patient’s mouth; however, as the mouth is constantly changing shape, it is common for adjustments to be made every now and again to ensure a perfect fit.

Benefits of dentures

Dentures have numerous benefits; firstly, they create an attractive, natural looking smile, which is particularly impressive if you have lost all or most of your natural teeth. Dentures enable you to smile with confidence and feel happy about the look of your smile.

Dentures also restore the function of the mouth; the teeth have a number of important roles and missing teeth can cause problems for speech, eating and aesthetics. Dentures enable you to eat the foods you love, speak clearly and they also provide support for your cheeks, which creates a more youthful and attractive facial aesthetic.

Caring for dentures

Just as you care for your natural teeth, you also have to care for dentures. We advise patients to remove their dentures at night to allow the gums to rest. At Devonshire Square Dental Studio in the city of London, we recommend daily cleaning to ensure that the denture is clean and to reduce the risk of infection. We are happy to provide advice about denture cleaning and to recommend cleaning products. We advise you to clean your denture at least once a day using a soft-bristled brush and denture cleaning solution; it is best to clean your denture while standing over a sink full of water so that the denture will not break if you accidentally drop it. Always store your denture in a safe place and keep the denture moist when you are not wearing it by leaving it in lukewarm water.

Treat Missing Teeth With Modern Dentures For Patients In London

December 20th, 2012

Dentures are one of the oldest forms of tooth replacement available; their origins can be traced all the way back to the 8th century. Things have progressed a bit since the days of dentures being made from wood or animal bone. The modern dentures available at Devonshire Square Dental Studio are made from materials that you might be more inclined to put in your mouth!

What are dentures?

Dentures are a form of replacement for missing teeth and can either be used to replace a few teeth (partial denture) or a full set (full denture). They are now made from an acrylic resin which is fixed to metal. Partial dentures are a great way to prevent the movement of your healthy teeth, whilst any kind of denture is great a way to combat the problems regarding speech and eating which missing teeth cause.

Getting dentures fitted

Getting a denture produced will take roughly a month and will usually require 5 appointments at your dental practice. An impression of your mouth will be made which will be used as a template for your dentures. We will also ask you to use a trial denture, just to make sure you comfortable with the appearance and feel of dentures in general. If any tooth extraction is required, we typically will wait two months before starting the process of fitting dentures. This allows for enough time for your gums to heal. Post-procedure, you might find using dentures a little strange. This is common, so don’t panic. It is recommended to consume soft foods and liquids only for a short while after your denture has been fitted.

Should I wear my dentures at night?

We recommend taking them out at night as it allows your gums to rest. Research also shows that leaving your dentures out for about 8 hours a day improves oral health. Patients with immediate dentures are recommended to wear them for the first night they have them.

Modern Day Dentures For Patients In London

October 11th, 2012

Advancement in technologies, novel materials used in dentistry and innovative dental techniques have led to the development of modern denture solutions for replacing missing teeth. Teeth may be lost due to tooth decay, gum disease or oral trauma. Modern day dentures may replace one or more missing teeth.

Assessment for modern day dentures

After assessment, if dentures are suitable, individuals have choices in the type of denture they may prefer. Using dental impressions and images, dentures are custom-made. Time may be needed for gums to heal from extraction before temporary dentures are provided. The bespoke dentures are then fitted and adjusted, providing fully functional teeth with a natural smile.

Options in modern day dentures

Individuals are offered choices in dentures for partial or full teeth replacement. Partial, immediate and complete dentures may be:

  • acrylic resin bonded to metal base
  • plastic

Dentures serve to mimic natural teeth and gums, restoring oral function for eating and speaking, and giving aesthetic appeal to the face and smile. Immediate dentures may need adjustment as the oral contours change. Plastic dentures may be less flexible than acrylic resin dentures with a metal base.

It is natural for gum tissue to change over time and dentures may need adjustment. There is also an initial period of getting used to denture wear. For better retention and stability, some people opt for implant-supported dentures that feel and look just like natural teeth supporting facial structures and expression.

Wear and care of modern day dentures

Dentures are designed for daily wear, approximately eight hours per day. Dentures may be soaked in a cleansing solution or lukewarm water overnight and cleaned with a soft-bristled brush, allowing gums to rest overnight. Following dentist-recommended guidelines for oral hygiene practise, denture care and repair allows patients to get the best out of their dentures for longer-lasting results.

Dental Implants for the Replacement of Missing Teeth and the Stabilisation of Loose Dentures for Patients in Central London

June 19th, 2012

Dental implants are a perfect and permanent way to replace missing teeth without the difficulty often associated with dentures. As dentures are prone to slip and slide whilst eating or talking, especially on the lower jaw, dental implants are the best alternative, using titanium anchors to stabilise your dental restorative.

Dental implants make your dentures stables, more comfortable and easy to use, giving you a perfect smile and your confidence back.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The main benefit of dental implants is that they can last a person a whole lifetime. Dental implants will replace any missing or damaged teeth and look just as real as the surrounding healthy teeth without damaging any of them. In fact they do the complete opposite, as dental implants can assist with preserving the adjacent bone and gum tissue, which is usually worn down with the use of traditional dentures.

What happens during the dental implant procedure?

The procedure for placing dental implants involves surgically placing implant titanium anchors into the jawbone of the patient. These anchors will then function like the natural root of the tooth and after a sufficient amount of time has passed the anchors will bond with the bone and gum tissue surrounding them. Studs are then attached to the anchors, so when the gum and bone has healed natural looking crowns, dentures or bridges can be attached to the studs to give you back that confidence-boosting smile.

Once this is done you continue living just the way you did with your original teeth and wont have to suffer the problems that come with dentures such as eating certain food, as these teeth are just as good as natural teeth.

Replacing Your Missing Teeth with Dentures at a London Dentist

June 5th, 2012

Complete tooth loss can be devastating to a person’s emotional and oral health and can also have an overall negative effect on the body as a whole. Certain foods cannot be eaten, the face looks sunken and aged and speech is also altered. Tooth loss can make you look, feel and sound like a different person, but thankfully there are numerous treatments that can be used to restore a broken smile, including complete dentures.

Dentures for the replacement of missing teeth

Dentures have been used to replace missing teeth for many, many years and are one of the most cost effective options for restoring a smile.

Making custom-fitted dentures requires around 5 appointments, which may involve:

  • Checking and assessing your dental and oral health.
  • Making a dental impression of your gums and mouth.
  • Using a ‘try-in’ denture to see what kind of denture suits you.
  • Fitting you with a temporary denture while you wait for your custom-fitted denture.
  • Making sure that your new denture fits you perfectly.

Some patients in London may also require tooth extraction before they can be fitted with dentures, so we will wait 8 weeks in order to give the gums time to heal.

How to look after your denture

A denture can last 10-15 years without needing to be altered if you keep the health of your mouth in optimum condition. This requires keeping the gums clean and soaking your dentures overnight. It is advisable to always take your dentures out when you sleep, to allow your gum times to rest.

Also avoid putting your dentures in hot water, as this could warp the denture, making it un-wearable.

Dentures and dental implants

Dentures can also be held in place using dental implants, which increases the stability and strength of your smile, making eating, speaking and smiling as easy as it was with your own teeth.

How to use denture fixative and what City of London dentists can do if this just isn’t enough

January 3rd, 2012

People who have suffered gum disease, gingivitis or periodontal disease may be given dental treatment to prevent further infection, such as root canal treatment and replacement teeth, including dentures, dental implants or crowns.

Wearing dentures, whether part or full, as teeth replacements that slot onto your remaining teeth to support your teeth structure can sometimes bring certain challenges, particularly if the dentures slip.

Why use denture fixative?

Denture fixative can be used to secure the dentures to your own teeth, and for:

  • Giving you a sense of greater confidence when wearing dentures – not fearing that the denture may fall out or wobble when you speak.
  • Reducing denture movement when you eat or speak.
  • Preventing gum irritation and pressure if dentures do slip, particularly during physical games or sports.
  • Filling gaps where food may lodge and cause a build-up of dental plaque.

How is denture fixative used?

There are a range of denture fixatives available, from strips to powders and creams. You can use the following steps to apply denture fixative to secure your dentures and prevent them from moving around in your mouth:

  • Clean your own teeth and dentures using brushing with toothpaste and denture cleaning solution.
  • Then make sure you have dried your dentures.
  • Now apply small amounts of the denture fixative where it is needed – do not let it ooze out!
  • Rinse your mouth and insert your dentures, holding them down to adhere to the dental fixative.
  • Keep holding and allow the dentures to seal to the fixative for about seven to ten seconds.
  • Try not to eat or drink for about twenty minutes thereafter.
  • You can remove excess fixative by brushing it and your dentures with warm water.

What if denture fixative still doesn’t work?

If you’re still having challenges with movement of your dentures, even when you use dental fixative, speak with your dentist about solutions, such as dental implants. With dental implants, titanium “roots” permanently hold replacement teeth, like crowns, bridges and dentures in place, so that you don’t have to worry about feeling orally clumsy anymore!

City of London dentists want to make sure loose Dentures don’t ruin your Christmas

December 21st, 2011

Dentures can make a real difference to a person’s life; whether replacing just one or two teeth or a full set, dentures can return any confidence lost due to a damaged smile.

However, there are some drawbacks to wearing dentures, which include the need for intensive cleaning and problems with the loose fit of dentures, thus causing irritation and sore gums.

The main reason for dentures becoming loose is due to a shrinking jaw, which happens as we get older and lose bone density. This reduction in size and volume can cause dentures to become loose, which usually requires denture adjustment.

Other common reasons for loose dentures involve everyday wear and tear, hard foods and even thorough cleaning of the dentures.

Over Christmas the range of sweet and sugary foods we usually eat can pose a serious risk to dentures. Hard foods can damage and crack dentures over time and while it doesn’t mean tasty, sweet foods are off the table completely, it would be smart to be aware of these risks and moderate yourself appropriately.

Knowing that your dentures are loose can make you very self conscious, as you don’t want them to slip out in the middle of conversation, or during mealtimes.

There are a number of ways to fix loose dentures, which largely depends on what type of dentures you have and could include denture fixatives, pastes or dental implants.

If you do feel that your dentures are becoming loose the best thing to do is to contact your dentist and see what they recommend. Going for regular check-ups will allow your dentist to continually assess your dentures and make amendments when necessary.

Get functional teeth within a short space of time at City of London dentists

December 3rd, 2011

Losing teeth is a common predicament for adults over 60 years old. For others of a younger age, tooth loss may be due to accident or injury. Dentures are the most obvious solution, but traditional dentures are not very stable and can be very problematic. All on 4 implants is a fixed, long-term and aesthetically pleasing solution for your dental replacement problems. Within a day you can have a complete and functional smile, without the need for any bone-grafting.

The Procedure

4 implants are fitted in the jaw, which provides the stable base for a denture or bridge. The implants at the posterior of the mouth are placed at an angle of 45 degrees to allow for maximum support. Patients with low bone levels on their jaw are required to go through a long and tiring process of bone grafting. However, with All on 4 you can achieve the beautiful, functional smile you desire without the need for bone grafting. Once the implants are placed, the dentist can fix a dental prosthesis to your jaw for a complete and stable smile.

Benefits

The overall time taken, from your first sitting with the dentist to complete recovery after surgery, takes a matter of days. The dentist will fix the temporary prosthesis within 2 to 3 sittings and the remaining days will be needed to fully recover from the surgery.  The temporary prosthesis has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years, but you can opt for a permanent prosthesis 6 months after treatment, which can last a lifetime.

Traditional dental implant techniques can take anywhere between one year to eighteen month and are unsuitable for patient’s with low bone density, whereas All on 4 can provide results in a day and does not require any invasive bone grafting procedures.

Post Surgery Care

Some precautionary steps must be taken after surgery, in order to avoid infection and to reduce pain. Cold and soft food should be eaten for the first 2 days and ice packs can be applied to the affected area in order to reduce swelling. Just one day is required for recovery after the process, but a few more days is required to completely recover from the bruises.

Dentures have come a Long way!

May 19th, 2011

When you imagine dentures, there must be a high percentage which shows that you think back to when you first saw your grandparent’s false teeth which were put in a container of liquid late at night. Or maybe you saw them sitting on a window sill just before they were about to be cleaned? Admittedly not a pretty sight, dentures have improved dramatically since those times with impressive speed.

There are currently multiple types of dentures, largely attributed to the fact that they consist of a variety of materials which are designed to last the duration of the patients’ life and not just a few years.

Partial acrylic is one material which is becoming increasingly popular. Ideal for individuals who have missing one or two teeth, the denture is designed to each patient so there is no chance of them falling out.

Full acrylic dentures are another type of denture treatment which it too is finding popularity. Comparable to partial acrylic dentures, the main difference here is that full acrylic dentures are designed to replace larger areas of teeth with even whole sections reinstated.

Also popular are dentures composed of chrome cobalt. These consist of metal which allows for them to have a guarantee of lasting longer than the type of dentures composed of acrylic. However, if you require additional teeth for your dentures after you have had them fitted in your mouth then this denture does not allow for this.

One other denture which has seen its popularity soar is implant retained dentures. These dentures are attached to the jawbone through the use of implants. There is no need for these dentures to be taken out and cleaned for they can be looked after in the same way your natural teeth are.

Dental implants placed by dentists in the know!

May 9th, 2011

Dental implants have fast become a revelation of modern dentistry. In the past, if you lost a tooth or had a tooth extracted, you either lived with a gap or had a bridge or dentures fitted; however, now, with dental implants, you can replace your missing tooth with a completely natural looking new tooth, which works in exactly the same way as an original tooth.

Dental implants are the most effective long-term treatment for missing or damaged teeth; the implant is a fine titanium rod, which is fitted into a pre-drilled socket in the jaw bone. Once the implant is settled into the jaw, a new crown is fitted to the implant and the new smile is complete.

Dental implants have a range of benefits; they look completely natural, they function as effectively as natural teeth and they reduce bone loss. The implant is made of titanium, meaning that it settles into the bone tissue without having any adverse effects on the healthy surrounding tissue.

As well as being attached to crowns, dental implants can also be used ti support dental bridges and dentures. Many people think of bulky false teeth when they hear the words dentures, but dentures have come a long way and they are now much lighter, more comfortable and more realistic looking. Dentures that are anchored by dental implants improve function and prevent pain and discomfort caused by ill-fitting dentures; you can also rest assured that your dentures will never come loose and you can continue to eat whatever you want.

Looking for a London dentist? City of London dentists are here to help.

Dental implants are expensive, but they are a long-term solution to missing teeth and they can make a huge difference; gaps in the teeth can create problems with speech and may affect your ability to eat and many people with missing teeth also feel self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth when they smile.
