Most crowns are made from ‘porcelain bonded to a precious metal’. A base of precious metal is initially made in this case and then the porcelain is applied over it in layers. A dental crown is used if a patient has lost a portion or the whole of a tooth; this can happen through trauma or poor oral health. Once the crown is created and has arrived at the dentist office the patient can return and have the permanent crown secured in place. This is done by numbing the tooth a second time before removing the temporary crown and cementing the new one in place.

Crown lengthening is a very common dental procedure, which is carried out when a tooth is damaged or decayed and needs repairing. The aim of the procedure is to expose a larger portion of the crown of the tooth; this is done by removing some of the gum or bone tissue.
Crown lengthening is usually carried out if you need a crown but there is not enough tooth exposed to accommodate a new crown. This sometimes happens if a tooth breaks at the gum line or the patient has a ‘gummy smile’, meaning that their gums cover a larger portion of the teeth than usual.
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure and you will be referred to a periodontist, a specialist in gum disease. The periodontist will examine your mouth and arrange a date for the procedure to take place; you will also be advised to have a cleaning treatment, to remove plaque and tartar from the mouth before you have your operation.
Crown lengthening is usually carried out under local anaesthetic; the procedure may take a while, especially if more than one tooth is affected; after the gums have been prepared, a temporary crown will be attached and this will stay in place until the gums have healed fully and a new crown can be placed. After the procedure, you may experience pain and discomfort but this should subside very quickly if you take painkillers; your dentist will also advise you to use a special mouth rinse and talk to you about cleaning your teeth. As you will have stitches in your gum, it is important to try and avoid brushing near the gums instead you can use a rinse or irrigator to remove food particles. It is advisable to avoid hard foods for a while after the surgery, as this may be painful.

Dentistry has come a long way…
