Cosmetic dentistry – not to be left for Hollywood to enjoy

July 13th, 2011

Like cosmetic surgery, cosmetic dentistry is fast becoming the norm these days when it comes to fixing those problem areas. In the past any form of cosmetic work, whether it be in your mouth or in other areas of the body was left to the rich and famous, mainly because they were the only ones who could afford it but also because cosmetic work has carried with it a stigma of vanity and self-indulgence. That stigma has slowly declined though in recent years as more and more normal, everyday people look to cosmetic surgery in curing their body woes.

How do the celebs do it?

Cosmetic dentistry is popular in celebrity culture. Simon Cowell’s pop star manufacturing office is actually now fitted with its very own dentist chair to turn those simple smiles into dazzling works of art. Cheryl Cole was not born with that bright white perfectly straight smile and cosmetic dentistry can make any smile dazzle like those of the rich and famous.

As always, it is perhaps the celebrity culture that has brought cosmetic dentistry to the forefront of the everyday consumer’s mind and shameless celebrity endorsement of such treatment has most definitely lessened the stigma of faking a perfect smile.

Whoops!

Whilst eating at a fancy restaurant recently, ex-supermodel and reality TV star Janice Dickinson lost her veneers, and after slipping them in her napkin and continuing with her evening she couldn’t find them when she came to leave. Being the exuberant character she is, she involved all the staff in a hunt for the missing teeth and after they were found she thanked staff for their help, confessing: “These things are so expensive they could feed a small village.”

It is such open and unashamed celebrity endorsement of such treatment that makes cosmetic dentistry a possibility for us all. For those of us who walk around daily nervous to flash a smile at a friend, a work colleague and even the attractive guy making eyes at us across the room, something can be done and we should take advantage of what cosmetic dentistry can do for us.

Whether it be veneers, straightening, a simple teeth whitening treatment or something a little more technical that is needed to perfect your Hollywood smile, it can be done and you can have it. Don’t leave it to the rich and famous – get your perfect smile today!

Celebrities put braces on the A-list

July 11th, 2011

Glamorous Smiles

If the most glamorous, popular and most sought after starry eyed celebrities are using them, surely wearing a brace can no longer be seen to be an ordeal reserved for the painful years of adolescence?

Take Holly Willoughby, for example, the latest celebrity to hit the headlines with braces. Posing for Twitter, the close-up picture shows Holly smiling widely in braces which appear to be near-invisible, ultra-thin white metal wires. Beneath the picture she writes, ‘Brace yourself, I’ve got braces!’

Willoughby isn’t the first celebrity to opt for braces. Other celebrities, such as Marks and Spencer’s protégée, Myleene Klass, have also used braces to perfect their smile, a reassuring sight for the general public, particularly young women who class these celebrities as emulative role models. Surely with such beautiful, iconic women wearing them ‘normal folk’ need no longer fear the humiliation of ‘going public’?

Why a Celebrity Smile is Priceless

Holly Willoughby is sending out a really positive message to people who want to have a brace fitted. Braces are an essential way to create a lovely, straight smile and will boost your overall dental hygiene, making it easier for you to floss and brush between teeth. A straighter smile will also improve your overall bone structure.

Let’s face it; when it comes to sorting out the important stuff no amount of vanity can get in the way. Everybody wants their teeth to look and feel good, and if the gorgeous women of TV are happy to get their teeth straightened at the expense of a little metal wiring, then why shouldn’t we?

Just do it!

Braces have progressed a lot since metal brackets and there are now a range of discreet braces available such as Invisalign, a clear plastic retainer that fits over the teeth which can even be removed at your own discretion. You needn’t be stuck in a rut when it comes to selecting the best brace for your teeth, so talk to your dentist about finding the most suitable brace to achieve your perfect smile today.

Hollywood star turns to the dark side of dentistry

July 8th, 2011

Jennifer Aniston is starring in a new movie about a bossy, sexually abusive Dentist. The Hollywood actress, who is often seen looking angelic and wearing a fabulous smile, is going to surprise fans when her new movie ‘Horrible Bosses’ hits the big screen this Friday.

The red carpet favourite has ditched her golden locks and girl-next-door image to play an overly flirtatious brunette who runs a dental surgery.

The film is a much darker comedy for Jennifer and hosts an all-star cast, based on a tale of three evil bosses and three employees who are victims of abuse. The film has themes of a sexual nature (by Aniston) and revenge – certainly not the activity you would expect to see in a dental surgery.

This is an unusual role for Aniston and a far cry from her sweet, lovable character, Rachel from ‘Friends.’ The star is generally recognised in Romantic comedies, such as ‘The Bounty Hunter’ and ‘Along Came Polly.’ Her role as Dr. Julie Harris in ‘Horrible Bosses’ is a daring performance for the Hollywood starlet and playing an immoral Dentist is finally a role she can really get her teeth into.

Aniston plays a dental boss who pushes the boundaries of sexual harassment with her assistant, played by Charlie Day. The central story for Aniston is when she blackmails her assistant by taking inappropriate and raunchy photographs of them together, however, the dental assistant is posing under anaesthetic, which Aniston issues to perform dental treatment.

The story focuses on three workers who are individually being bullied and abused by their bosses. Together they plan to kill their employers with the help of a hitman, played by Jamie Foxx. Aniston’s role is one that will illustrate a completely different slant regarding the dental practice. Fans will get to see Jennifer looking sexy in her dental attire as well as seeing the star perform in a darker light. One thing is for sure – the film is set to make audiences smile.

A punk hero in dental hell

July 4th, 2011

Known for his raucous ways and promoting a brand of butter, Johnny Rotten has lived up to his name in more ways than. John Lydon originally had bad teeth at the height of the Sex Pistols, but now surgery has seen his singing ways changing and even his own voice as well.

What’s happened to the former rock and roller?

Lydon has recently suffered from several dental ailments, which have included a double swollen abscess and gum disease, and which has left him needing surgery. As a direct result of this surgery, Lydon now has a speech impediment and it is no laughing matter.

“I’m not a vegetarian. I’m smart enough to realise I’ve got two sets of teeth in my mouth and I want to use both. Actually I have very few real teeth left. That’s something my parents didn’t pass on to me. They passed many good things on, but dental health wasn’t one of them” said Lydon who attributed his dental problems to his upbringing which did not focus at all on him leading a good level of oral health.

Fifty five years young, but with his teeth showing the signs of someone much older, Lydon has had to have a number of injections and surgical operations in order for his teeth to be corrected. And this was when the speech impediment became evident. “I have to keep having them done and they keep getting infections. I’m just recovering from a double abscess. I’ve had eight stitches in the front of my mouth so my top lip is sewn over the top gum so I’m talking a little strange. Every time I laugh the stitches pull” said Lydon.

It needn’t be this bad for you

London cosmetic dentist, Dr Mark Hughes has been selected to advertise Sensodyne’s new toothpaste range – Repair and Protect. The toothpaste has been clinically formulated to alleviate the piercing pain of sensitive teeth.

Dr Mark Hughes is a principal dentist at Devonshire Square Dental Studio located in London, England. He works alongside a large, multi-disciplinary team of dental professionals, helping patients achieve desired smiles. The opportunity to appear in a national television campaign to help promote the reputable brand – GlaxoSmithkine’s Sensodyne – will add to the ever-growing popularity of Dr Mark Hughes.

Sensodyne is a range of toothpastes designed to treat teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold foods, drinks or touch. Sensitive teeth, also referred to as dentine hypersensitivity, contain exposed nerves that cause anything from minor irritation to severe pain. The cause of the pain is the dentine layer of the teeth becoming exposed resulting in pain when eating, drinking, or even brushing teeth.

People of all ages report having sensitive teeth – around 40% of adults express having one or more sensitive teeth.  An effective remedy for sensitive teeth is using a toothpaste containing potassium nitrate. However, Dr Mark Hughes is advertising a new formula of Sensodyne toothpaste. Sensodyne Repair and Protect contains a unique ingredient to help repair the damaged dentine layer of sensitive teeth.  The unique ingredient is NovaMin which, when in contact with saliva, releases ions to repair vulnerable teeth. Using Sensodyne regularly has been shown to alleviate the pain associated with sensitive teeth.

A survey carried out by Sensodyne revealed that after a week without using Sensodyne 25% of participants reported relapse in pain and sensitivity. This research adds to the reputation and importance of Sensodyne.

Celebrities inspire treatment at London dentists

March 9th, 2011

Many people are encouraged to have dental work after seeing the success of the latest treatments on celebrity smiles.

Celebrity magazines are always full of stories about celebrities and their latest plastic surgery procedures. Many younger stars don’t need the usual types of cosmetic treatments, such as face lifts or Botox, but cosmetic dental treatment is very popular among celebrities of all ages. Many are happy to admit in the press that they have had treatment, while others try and keep it secret, despite the evidence to the contrary!

Seeing how successful a procedure like braces, veneers or whitening has been on a celebrity can inspire ordinary patients to turn up at dental clinics requesting similar treatments, so that they can get the same smile and the same look as their favourite celebrity. Some of the brightest and most dazzling famous smiles have been given a helping hand by dental practitioners, including Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani and actress Katherine Heigel.

Cyrus’ perfect smile was created with the help of a set of porcelain veneers, which can cover up minor imperfections in just one appointment, while Stefani and Heigl have both had orthodontic work to correct their crooked smiles. Heigl was treated using one of the new, modern types of invisible braces, while there are many pictures of Stefani with her traditional fixed braces, which helped to create the perfect smile we can all see today.

Often patients will come into clinics asking for a particular celebrity’s look, even if they don’t know what treatment they have had done! The “Kate Middleton” look is set to be one of the most popular over the next few months, as girls all over the world want to copy the perfect smile of the future princess. Reports suggest that Kate has had lots of different treatments, all over her body, in preparation for looking her best on the wedding day.

Although all the reports are only tabloid gossip, Kate is rumoured to have had orthodontic work on her teeth, using the latest 3D technology to reduce the amount of time that the patient has to wear their braces. Comparing her engagement pictures with previous newspaper shots, it appears she has also had professional teeth whitening carried out. No doubt the Kate Middleton smile will be recreated in many mouths around the world!
