Problems with thumb sucking solved by London dentists
Thumb sucking is a common habit in very young children, done by about a third of infants and is associated with the desire to eat or to feel comfort. Most children grow out of it by the age of five but for those who don’t it can be harmful to the healthy development of teeth. At about five or six years old your permanent teeth are beginning to develop and it is very important that children cease sucking their thumb at this age so as not to disrupt this process.
If thumb sucking continues during this crucial period the upper front teeth may begin to protrude outwards and the lower front teeth inwards, forced by the presence of the thumb. The mouth’s roof might be affected too and this can lead to problems with the position of the tongue or even swallowing and speaking in worst case scenarios. Thumb sucking can be a sign of stress in children so it might be wise to deal with the stress as the problem to help thumb sucking to stop.
If your child does not cease sucking their thumb naturally it can be difficult to get them to do so. It is important to be communicative and use gentle persuasion techniques. Offering rewards to the child to stop can be effective and it is better not to be heavy handed as this can make children even more determined to carry on. Discuss with your child why they do it and help them to understand in a calm fashion why they need to think about stopping.
